Numerical Analysis of Coupled Problems

Objective

The course discusses numerical methods about coupled problems, where different mathematical models for different physics are coupled along an interface. Examples are ocean-atmosphere interaction, fluid-structure interaction in wind turbines or airplane wings, or the interaction of bloodflow and artery walls. In the course, we discuss different ways of coupling models, both on the continuous and the discrete level. As particular examples, we focus on thermal and mechanical interactions, both steady and unsteady. The coupling typically leads to iterative processes, such as the Dirichlet-Neumann iteration, whose convergence behavior will be discussed in detail. A particular focus is on aspects of time integration of coupled problems where the underlying processes act on different time scales.

Pre-requisites/requirements

  • Multidimensional analysis, Linear algebra, Basic Programming, one course in Numerical analysis
  • Standard desktop computer/laptop with internet connection
  • It is typically not possible to admit MSc students to COMPUTE courses.
